Summer Sales: Whew, it’s HOT out there!  We’re staying cool here at Humankind, keeping the air conditioning going and offering lots of breezy t-shirts, shorts, tank tops and dresses on sale through the end of the month.  Stop by and beat the heat!

Back to School Clothing Buy: School starts August 12, and we’re planning to buy “back to school” outfits for at least 10 refugees in August.  Help us out – anything you purchase before July 31 will help pay for these “back to school” outfits.  If you’re not familiar with Nashville Public Schools’ dress code policy, read about it here.  It’s slightly complicated, which is why we want to ease the transition for refugees coming into American schools by taking care of this aspect for them.  We appreciate YOUR help and support in making this happen!

ArtEast Art Stroll 7/31/10: ArtEastNashville is THIS Saturday night, July 31, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.  Support the East Side’s art scene and view art at places like Open Lot, Billups, Art and Invention, Bongo Java, Kustom Thrills, Pied Piper Creamery, Fanny’s House of Music, Nashville Concrete Artist, and of course, Humankind!  We’re currently featuring art by Joshua Rhodes and Jeff Bertrand, two super-talented local artists.  Stop by and check it out!

I don’t know about you, but I am so excited for another season of Madmen to begin.  If you’re attending a premiere party or just watching it at home, get dolled up with a vintage, 1960s-era dress!

Ch-ch-ch-changes!  As spring is beginning, we are making some changes here at Humankind.

Business status:
We wanted to let our community know about a change we are making in our business status.  Humankind began as a ministry of the Anchor Fellowship.  After 6 months of pursuing the 501(c)3 nonprofit status, we’ve decided to hold off for an indefinite amount of time.  Our goals as an organization have been, and continue to be, as follows:
1. To help international refugee students in Nashville to have a great school experience by purchasing new school clothes for them, and
2. To contribute in a positive way to the East Nashville small business community by providing a fun, inexpensive, and unique place to shop.

Basically, as a nonprofit, we learned that we would only have limited control over the path that Humankind takes.  Part of the reason that we (Ryan and Christina) started Humankind was to foster a small business.  We want to have more long-term, hands-on input with how this business looks and acts.

With our mission to help refugees, and our heart for local community, we’d like to continue to conduct Humankind as a socially-minded business.  As a for-profit business, we will continue to donate 15% of our profits to purchasing school clothes for refugees who attend Nashville Public Schools.  We appreciate your support, donations, and patronage to continue to make this possible!

Hours:
We are tweaking our hours slightly to better address your needs for more weekend and after work shopping!  New hours are as follows:

Wednesday – Friday: Noon – 6 pm
Saturday: 11 – 5 pm
Sunday: 1 – 4 pm
Monday & Tuesday: Closed

We’ll be offering some extended shopping hours in the late spring and summer, so stay tuned to our Twitter for the latest breaking news @HumankindNash.

We welcome any questions or comments about these changes.  Feel free to stop by the store during our new hours or email us anytime at humankindnashville@gmail.com.

Thanks for your support!

We will be serving ice cream from The Pied Piper Creamery at this free open house event.

Hope to see you… this year or next!

Dear friends:

It has been a great year at HUMANKIND!  The store is less than a year old, and we’ve come so far since February when we opened.  Thanks to your generous donations of clothing, money, and time, HUMANKIND has become a great success that continues to grow.

We opened HUMANKIND on February 14, 2009 in a small room in the basement of The Anchor Fellowship in downtown Nashville.  We are so thankful that The Anchor believed in the concept of HUMANKIND enough to offer their support and a space for us to operate.  In June, the store was bursting at the seams, so we closed for the summer and searched for a larger retail space.  In August, we opened at our current location in East Nashville, a re-emerging urban area of Nashville, and held our grand opening in September.  We are so excited to be a part of the East Nashville community.    After operating as a ministry of The Anchor for the past few months, we are in the process of submitting our application to become a 501(c)3 organization.  We are looking forward to the new year and are excited for the things in store for HUMANKIND!

The best news coming from HUMANKIND is that, since opening in February, we were able to provide full outfits for 40 international refugee students to wear to school.  This is all due to your patronage, donations, and support – THANK YOU!  Our goal in 2010 is to provide school clothes for at least 100 students.

HUMANKIND does not exist without the help of our community, friends, and family.  We appreciate everything you’ve done – and are continuing to do – to make this concept a reality.

Warm Regards,

Ryan & Christina
